K&R Fabrications (South32 Illawarra Coal – New South Wales, Australia)
K&R Fabrications required design verification of a high-tension cable drum for South32 Illawarra Coal. Avesta Consulting performed structural analysis and fatigue assessment of the cable drum in accordance with standard AS 4100 to verify structural integrity considering permanent, imposed (cable) and lifting loads.
What we did:
- Performed structural FEA of cable drum considering applied permanent, imposed (cable) and lifting loads to verify strength requirements.
- Determined peak cyclic stress range, calculated fatigue life in accordance with standard AS 4100 (applying fatigue assessment practices as per standard BS 7608) and compared with design life requirements.
Outcome:
Avesta Consulting verified structural integrity of the cable drum, confirmed adequate fatigue life assuming a fully loaded drum (equivalent to 6,000 kg cable weight) and identified critical fatigue damage locations for periodic visual inspection.
