BlueScope Steel (Port Kembla, New South Wales, Australia)
BlueScope Steel required structural assessment of an iron ore bin (Ore Preparation Bin 13) considering bin, bottom cone and internal/external stiffener components. Assessment was required to verify structural integrity of the bin and compliance of proposed staged design modifications in accordance with standard AS 4100 considering permanent and imposed (bulk material initial fill/discharge flow) loads.
What we did:
- Bulk material load calculations as per standard AS 3774 to determine iron ore induced bin/hopper wall normal pressure/shear stress distributions (considering initial fill and discharge flow conditions).
- Strength assessment (structural FEA) of iron ore bin to determine structural integrity and compliance of proposed bin design modifications as per standard AS 4100.
- Modified bin/cone wall thickness, external gusseting, gusset window infill plates, internal plating repair and bin wall door frame to determine minimal structural requirements (considering bulk material flow induced bin/cone wall erosion).
- Confirmed individual removal of damaged cone plate segments and external gussets to facilitate repairs.
Outcome:
Avesta Consulting confirmed global compliance of the iron ore bin design in accordance with standard AS 4100 considering proposed staged design modifications and repair procedures.
