Redpath Australia (Snowy Hydro – Tumut, New South Wales, Australia)
Redpath Australia required impact analysis of a travelling platform for the Tumut 1 Power Station Machine Hall Rehabilitation Project (Snowy Hydro). Impact analysis of the travelling platform was required to determine structural performance of the platform following a falling rock impact loading event. Impact loads were determined and applied at locations that would have worst effect on the structure, with elastic-plastic material and large deflection behaviour considered to verify overall structural integrity.
What we did:
- Performed strength assessment (structural FEA) of the travelling platform applying impact loads at worst case locations and considering nonlinear elastic-plastic material and large deflection behaviour.
- Determined deflections and stresses/strains in structural members, welded joint capacities and confirmed structural integrity and verified post-impact load compliance with standard AS 4100.
Outcome:
Avesta Consulting concluded that the structure had sufficient strength and ductility to resist a falling rock impact load considering multiple impact locations.
