IAC Acoustics (Westgate Tunnel - Melbourne, Victoria, Australia)
IAC Acoustics required design and structural analysis of a horizontal splitter attenuator configuration for the Westgate Tunnel project. Structural assessment of the horizontal splitter attenuator assembly was required to be performed in accordance with standard AS 4100 to verify integrity of the structural members and capacity of riveted/bolted/pinned connections, with loading conditions to be applied in accordance with standards AS/NZS 1170.0 and AS 1170.4 considering permanent, imposed (maximum air flow), thermal, seismic and lifting loads.
What we did:
- Performed strength assessment (structural FEA), fatigue analysis and design verification of the horizontal splitter assembly and horizontal attenuator layout applying permanent, imposed (maximum air flow), thermal, seismic and lifting loads.
- Determined deflections/stresses in structural members and support beams/wall brackets, welded joint, riveted/bolted connection and anchor bolt capacities, fatigue life assessment of structural components and strength/buckling capacity of lateral restraints/wall brackets.
- Implemented appropriate design modifications to achieve design compliance with standard AS 4100.
Outcome:
Avesta Consulting verified structural integrity of the horizontal splitter attenuator configuration and confirmed design compliance with the engineering principles and intent of standard AS 4100.
